Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Incorporated was founded on April 4, 1969 at Winston-Salem University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina by twelve dynamic women as an alternative to sororities and greek life. The founders of Swing went on to establish a organization dedicated to the uplifting women of color, recognizing Afrocentricity and the belief in knowledge, these women felt the need to become aware of their culture and history. Swing came about to serve this purpose and be the affiliated sister organization to the men of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. When Swing was first founded it grew at an exponential rate, inducting thousands of women in a few years. Due to the fact that the organization was so young, it became very difficult to manage when growing at such a speed. In light of this fact, the fellowship decided to suspend all undergrad intakes in 1982 to allow the organization time to establish itself on a national level. Finally, in the spring of 1992, the induction of 4 ladies at Penn State University and 1 lady from the University of Pennsylvania lead to the rebirth of the undergraduate sector nationwide.

Today, SWING is a unique, non-profit organization with over 50 active graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout the USA and a commitment to affecting social change, consciously uplifting women of color and being on the front line in regards to community involvement. Sisters of Swing work hard to enlighten individuals on the importance of political and cultural consciousness. The women of Swing are always in pursuit of higher intelligence let it be academic or cultural. All of the sisters have a degree or in pursuit of one from a accredited college, university, or technical college. These Ladies believe that they are an integral part of the community and therefore, have the responsibility to get involved.
